How did WOW started? What is it now?
The journal is an international cooperation between academic researchers and book and art specialists and enthusiasts.
It started as international annual journal (2009-2011) Women's Writing Online (WWOL) at www.womenswriting.fi where we published an issue of Poland Under Feminist Eyes (November 2009) now available in the extended version in print as Women's Voices and Feminism in Polish Cultural Memory (Cambridge Scholars, 2013). The second issue, published in 2011 (Izabela Filipiak's drama The Life of a Rabbit) is republished here. Ours story The idea of founding such a journal was born during the international seminar Poland Under Feminist Eyes held in London (November 2008) at UCL School of Slavic and East European Studies, where a group of women’s studies researchers gathered to discuss the role of feminism in contemporary Poland and in Polish literary and cultural history. Several of the speakers were already connected with the teamwork of Urszula Chowaniec, Marja Rytkönen and Kirsi Kurkijärvi at the University of Tampere (2007-2010) where the joint project Women’s Writing: Generation, Body and Transformation in Poland and Russia (www.womenswriting.fi) as well as with the conference on Femininity and Masquerade (2006). This Polish-Finnish initiative was joined, also in 2006, by Ursula Phillips, who organised the seminar in London altogether with Urszula Chowaniec. The seminar was attended by many dedicated and enthusiastic women and men from Poland, Britain and Finland keen to share their research results and ideas. |
Women's Writing Online becomes an international communication platform and journal celebrating women's creativity beyond borders, and change its name to Women Online Writing (WOW) with ISNN 1798-3835, registered at the Finnish Academy. Now the ISNN changes as the name and the place of publication have changed into ISNN 2056-4791.
